cia director david petraeus to resign is widening. here's what we know. petraeus' mistress paula broadwell sent emails to petraeus and other senior military leaders besides general john allen. he's the top commander in afghanistan. meanwhile the fbi agent frederick humphries who launched the investigation of emails is being investigated by the fbi for his role in the case. specifically why he took concerns about this case to republican members of congress. house and senate panels are expected to meet again today with fbi and cia officials. they want to know whether national security was jeopardized and why congress didn't know about the investigation sooner. during a news conference on wednesday president obama praised david petraeus. >> general petraeus had an extraordinary career. he served this country with great distinction in iraq, in afghanistan and as head of the cia. by his own assessment he did not meet the standards that he felt were necessary as the director of the cia with respect to this personal matter that he's now dealing with, with his family and with his wife. a

, cnn national security contributor, fran townsend. she's also a member of the cia external add voizry committee and knowed a lot about what it means to have top clearance. the name of the fbi agent, frederick humphries, who was by the way, involved in foiling a terrorist attack in 1999. very accomplished fbi agent. what do you know about the relationship? >> it's interesting. apparently, i understand from a senior law enforcement official that humphries and jill kelley met when she attended the citizens academy. this is a sort of familiarization program that the fbi runs across the country in communities to familiarize people and sort of get them to understand the work of the fbi in their community so it's part of the see something, say something. this is another mean of the fbi reaching out in local communities. jill kelley attended in tampa. agent humphries i'm also told is a member of the fig. field intelligence group. it would make sense. part of their responsibility is to go out, to gather information, you know, appropriate to their mission. and the fact is, that because j

, that david petraeus signed off on, the director of cia wrote the assessment, that's what she was doing. there are people in the white house, particularly the president, but a lot of support staff feel as if susan rice has gotten a raw deal on this. that she has been a political punching bag, if you will, over the last month and a half because of the presidential campaign, because of other things. so, this point when mccain and graham did their thing, that's why the president felt he needed to stand up for his u.n. ambassador. there's -- obviously he was giving off an indication he's willing to have a confirmation fight if they want to have one. but there's more to this, chris. there's more to this. this goes back to mccain and obama, they never -- they never had a warm relationship after the 2008 election. mccain, i think, has been tougher on the president than in the reverse. the president has sort of not taken the bait when mccain has hit him and hit him pretty hard. and i think this was an indication the president is ready to sort of fight back when it comes to mccain. this is

. what are you learning, dana. >> reporter: that's right. this is a group of officials from the cia including the acting cia director, mr. clapper and others from the state department have been going around. they had a very long meeting on the house side for the house intelligence committee this morning. by the way, this is the one that general petraeus was supposed to be doing coming back after congress was gone and really giving them the details that they have about what happened in benghazi, why the intelligence community may have not had the correct initial information about what happened there and what they know now. that briefing on the senate side is going on as we speak. and as i mentioned, we're going to hear from the chairwoman in the ranking republican. what we do know is that they are seeing a video that was obtained from the consulate. it was a closed circuit video that intelligence officials are hoping will shed light on what really happened and why the information they had at the time may not be what it turned out to be in the end. >> dana, thanks very much. we'll hav

. the fail tur, if there was one, was by the cia and questions about the information given to susan rice. i find that they skirt around that. the other issue brought up regarding this meeting that was supposed to take place yesterday or briefing that senator mccain missed because there was a scheduling error. at the same time he was holding a news conference. this adds to the notion that this is about politics, even though he and his staff indicate there was a scheduling error as to why he would miss a briefing on benghazi and instead be holding a news conference. >> you know, i think it is pretty clear that this is politics. if you remember, again, when condoleezza rice was up for confirmation, she did grilled. she only, i think, got confirmed by 85 votes, 15 democrats voted against her. they had legitimate concerns about her in some of the intelligence failures around iraq. but i do think it's going to be difficult if the president decides to nominate susan rice, and we don't know that he will, but it seems that he was certainly coming to her defense in a vigorous way. i don't see
